NagpurIndia’s left-arm spin all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja has been fined 25 per cent of his match fee and given one de-merit point for breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct during the first Test against Australia. The International Cricket Council (ICC) said in a release that Jadeja has been fined for applying cream on his bowling finger without permission from the umpires. It added that Jadeja, however, did not make any changes to the condition of the ball. The addition of one demerit point to Jadeja’s disciplinary record means it is his first offense in 24 months.
The incident happened in the 46th over of Australia’s first innings on the first day of the match on Thursday when they were at 120/5. The footage of Jadeja applying a cream to the swelling on the index finger of his bowling hand without seeking permission from the on-field umpires to do so went viral on social media. The video showed Jadeja applying cream on the index finger of his left hand just before he started bowling. At that time the ball was in his hand. The incident sparked a lot of debate on social media. Jadeja admitted the offense and accepted the punishment proposed by Andy Pycroft of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees, so there was no need for a formal hearing.
The ICC said, “In arriving at his decision to penalize the player with the Level 1 penalty, the match referee was satisfied that the cream had been applied to the finger solely for medical purposes.” Jadeja border- Made a successful return to international cricket after five months with a knee injury in the First Test of the Gavaskar Trophy, taking 5/47 and 2/34 in both innings with the ball. He scored a crucial 70 with the bat to give them the edge in India’s innings that eventually led them to victory in Nagpur. After the end of the match, he was named player of the match.
