BCCI may announce the team for Asia Cup 2023 on Monday. Several reports have claimed that the BCCI selectors will meet Team India captain Rohit Sharma and coach Rahul Dravid to decide the final squad for the Asia Cup starting on August 30. India’s first match is against arch-rivals Pakistan in Sri Lanka on 2 September. The Asia Cup squad holds additional importance as it will more or less determine how the team will be for the ODI World Cup 2023. This is the last chance for the team management to explore all the options. Let’s have a look at the possible names who can be selected for Asia Cup 2023. A 17-member squad is likely to be selected as there is a provision in the Asia Cup.
Rohit Sharma (Captain): He is an automatic choice. India’s regular captain and prolific opening batsman, Sharma has scored 632 runs in 17 ODIs since the start of 2022 at an average of 45.14.
Shubman Gill: In the last one year, he has been seen reaching great heights. Since January 2022, he has scored 1388 runs in 24 ODIs at an impressive average of 69.40.
Virat Kohli : Kohli, the greatest batsman of the modern era, is a big tournament player. His ODI record is going to reach equal to Sachin. The ODI team cannot be imagined without Kohli.
Tilak Verma: This young left-handed batsman has impressed everyone in his international debut. He provides a different dimension in a team full of right-handed batsmen. Their first T20I series against the West Indies was promising to say the least.
KL Rahul (wicketkeeper): This is the tricky part. If he was fully fit, he would have become an automatic choice. But he has not been able to get on the field since May due to a thigh injury. According to reports, he has recovered and has taken part in match simulation. He has also started wicketkeeping in practice sessions. The selectors can bet on him as he can do wicketkeeping as well.
Ishaan Kishan (wicketkeeper): He can do wicketkeeping, can open, has played in the middle order and is a left handed player. In the absence of Rishabh Pant, the chances of him being ignored are very less.
Shreyas Iyer: Another case of injury is raising doubts over his selection. He was kept out of the field for a long time due to a lower back injury. But like Rahul, he too has started batting in practice. The selectors might have wanted to give him a chance to prove his fitness. He is a solid option for No.4, provided he is fit and in form.
Suryakumar Yadav: His ODI form has been very poor. Still, his ability in the middle overs is hard to ignore.
Hardik Pandya: India’s best fast bowling all-rounder, Pandya is not only important for his game but also for his leadership qualities. India needs him to play the role of finisher.
Ravindra Jadeja: Pandya and Jadeja are the best all-rounders in India at the moment. However, no limited overs team can live without this pair. Jadeja’s spin ability is a big plus on subcontinent pitches.
Jasprit Bumrah: He has started bowling in the matches against Ireland, a clear indication that the selectors will back him to be a part of the Asia Cup and World Cup. Even after 11 months of absence due to injury, he has not slowed down.
Mohammed Shami: His seam bowling abilities can never be ignored. Can prove to be important for India in the initial overs.
Mohammad Siraj: Probably the best Indian fast bowler in the last two years. Clearly one of the top three best Indian fast bowlers at present.
Shardul Thakur: Another fast bowling all-rounder, he can beat the big names in the playing eleven due to his ability to bat lower down the order and his uncanny ability to deliver breakthroughs.
