The government has initially set aside an incentive fund of $10 billion to set up a semiconductor manufacturing ecosystem, including wafer fabrication plants, in the country. India can become the world leader in semiconductor manufacturing
Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnav said in an interview to news agency Bhasha that we are focusing on some specific areas, where we can take global leadership. We have emerged as a major segment for telecom and EV (electric vehicle) semiconductors. If we focus on developing and manufacturing chips used in these segments, we can become a global leader in these. He said that work is being done keeping these emerging areas in mind.
American company Micron is running an assembly plant in Sanand.
He said that we should get great success in the next few months. It will be a complete (ecosystem) of fab (wafer fabrication), design, manufacturing. When asked whether this would happen in a year, the minister said no, we will achieve success soon. He said that with the success of American storage chip manufacturer Micron’s investment in India, the whole world has become very confident about India’s potential. Memory chip maker Micron started construction of a semiconductor assembly plant in Sanand, Gujarat last month. In June, the company had announced to set up a semiconductor assembly and testing plant in Gujarat at a cost of $ 2.75 billion (about Rs 22,540 crore). Micron will invest up to $825 million to set up the plant in two phases and the remaining investment will come from the central and state governments.
Five companies partnered with Micron
The Union Minister said that Micron’s component suppliers are also in the final stages of the process of identifying land in collaboration with the state government. He said that according to the information I received, five companies (Micron’s partners) have come. The land identification process is going on. One of Micron’s largest ecosystem partners is already in the land allocation process.
Government sets deadline for indigenous chipset
The government has already set the deadline for commercial introduction of the first indigenous chipset by 2023-24 under the Digital India ‘Risk-V’ programme. Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)-Madras and Center for Development of Advanced Computing (CDAC) under the aegis of Microprocessor Development Program of the Ministry of Electronics and IT have developed Shakti (32-bit) and Vega (64-bit) respectively using open source architecture. Have developed two microprocessors named. Vaishnav said that the government is working on creating four-five components where India can become a global hub not only to meet domestic needs but also to export across the world.
