IPL 2023: Bhuvneshwar to lead Sunrisers Hyderabad in Markram’s absence in first match: Report

Hyderabad | India’s senior fast bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar will captain Sunrisers Hyderabad in their IPL match against Rajasthan Royals on April 2. Bhuvneshwar will take over the responsibility in the absence of newly appointed regular captain Aiden Markram.

In the absence of Markram, Bhuvneshwar Kumar will take charge of Sunrisers Hyderabad, who will play their first match against Rajasthan Royals on 2 April.

Markram is currently in South Africa for the two ODI series against the Netherlands and will reach India on April 3. The series is crucial from South Africa’s point of view of securing a direct berth in the World Cup to be held in India later this year. They would have to win both ODIs against the Netherlands without an over-rate penalty, and also hope to lose at least one match in Ireland’s three-ODI home series against Bangladesh in May.

Bhuvneshwar has been associated with Hyderabad since 2013 and has also captained the team in the past. He has led Hyderabad in a total of seven matches, including six in 2019 and one in 2022. Under the captaincy of Bhubaneshwar, Hyderabad has won two matches.

After finishing eighth on the points table last season, Hyderabad made major changes to their team, with the biggest change being the release of Kane Williamson and confidence in Markram’s leadership ability.

In the inaugural season of the SA20 league, Markram captained the Sunrisers Eastern Cape. Markram’s team won the title of this league. Markram was the third highest run-scorer in the tournament, scoring 369 runs at a strike rate of 127, while also taking 11 wickets at an economy of 6.19.

Apart from Markram, Heinrich Klaasen and Marco Jansson will also be unavailable for Hyderabad in the first match. In this sense, before their first match, Hyderabad will have only five options as foreign players. Hyderabad has to play its second match against Lucknow on April 7.(IANS)
