IPL 2023: Chennai top points table with 49-run win over Kolkata

Kolkata, . Mahesh Thikshana and Tushar Deshpande took two wickets each in the IPL match played at Eden Gardens here on Sunday. Chennai Super Kings restricted Kolkata Knight Riders to 186/8 in a mammoth defense of 235 and won by 49 runs to top the points table. Devon Conway was followed by Ajinkya Rahane and Shivam Dube hitting half-centuries as the Kolkata bowlers posted the highest IPL score at the venue. Jason Roy and Rinku Singh scored brilliant half-centuries for KKR. Even then he could not save Kolkata from the fourth defeat.
Roy injured his ankle while trying to hit a boundary. After that Sunil Narine was sent to bat. But on the fourth ball, Akash Singh uprooted his off-stump and got him out. In the next over, N. Jagadeesan dismissed Deshpande and Ravindra Jadeja took a diving catch at third man.
Nitish Rana and Venkatesh Iyer hit two sixes and five fours in a 35-ball 45-run standoff, before Moeen Ali dismissed the latter plumb lbw on his first ball. Roy came in to bat at number five and started off with a bang with a hat-trick of sixes, sweep twice and reverse sweep once.
Rana went for a slog sweep off Ravindra Jadeja but was caught at deep midwicket. Chennai tried to run out Roy and Rinku from either end, but the batsmen reached in time. Roy emphatically removed Jadeja for six and four respectively, while Rinku hit another six, taking the tally to 19 runs in the 11th over.
Roy then swung Mahesh Thikshana for four and six respectively, before Rinku hit Jadeja over deep midwicket for a six. Roy brought up his half-century in 19 balls, dismissing third man for four.
Despite Andre Russell and Umesh Yadav being caught in the deep as David Wiese was trapped LBW, Rinku continued to smash boundaries and brought up his half-century in 30 balls, while the margin of defeat for Kolkata remained below 50 runs.
