Sunil Joshi was also made India’s chief selector in 2020. At the end of the same year, Chetan Sharma got the responsibility of chief selector in place of Josh. Even after this he was part of the panel as a selector. Joshi represented India in 15 Tests and 69 ODIs from 1996 to 2001, taking 41 and 69 wickets respectively. He also represented Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) as a player in the 2008 and 2009 seasons of IPL.
As a coach, Joshi has coached the senior teams of Hyderabad, Jammu & Kashmir and Assam in the Ranji Trophy. He had also previously served as the spin-bowling coach of teams from Oman, Bangladesh and the United States.

Earlier in November, Punjab had appointed former India opener Wasim Jaffer as their batting coach and former South African pacer Charl Langeveldt as their bowling coach. He also appointed former Australian wicketkeeper-batsman Brad Haddin as assistant coach. Punjab had appointed England’s ODI World Cup 2019 winning coach Trevor Bayliss as their head coach, replacing former India head coach Anil Kumble.
Punjab named experienced left-handed opener Shikhar Dhawan as the captain of the team for IPL 2023 after releasing their 2022 season skipper Mayank Agarwal. Punjab, the IPL 2014 runners-up, finished sixth on the points table in the ten-team IPL 2022.
