New Delhi: Chennai Super Kings on Thursday appointed opener-batsman Ruturaj Gaikwad as the successor to MS Dhoni. Now Dhoni will not lead the team in the upcoming season. After the sudden change in captaincy, there are speculations that this could be Dhoni’s last IPL season.
Meanwhile, a big question is that why was the responsibility handed over to Ruturaj, is it CSK’s haste or some special strategy of Dhoni.
The charge of Chennai, which won the IPL title five times under the leadership of Dhoni, is now on the shoulders of Rituraj Gaikwad. He made his debut for CSK in 2019.
This is a big decision for both CSK and Ruturaj. On one hand, Gaikwad faces the challenge of inheriting Dhoni and taking over the reins of a champion team, while on the other hand, CSK would not like to repeat the mistake of 2022, where the team was in a bad shape due to the change in captaincy.
Rituraj’s every move will be closely monitored and he will be compared to a legend, so it is natural that there will be pressure on this batsman too.
CSK had included Gaikwad in IPL 2019. After that he never disappointed the team with his performance.
Chennai made a big bet in IPL 2020 when Gaikwad was given a chance to play as an opener. Making his IPL debut, CSK gave Gaikwad six matches and he scored 204 runs at an impressive average of 51.
Gaikwad scored 635 runs for champion Chennai Super Kings in 2021 and captured the Orange Cap.
This was the same year 2021, when Gaikwad broke Murali Vijay’s record of scoring most runs in a season as a CSK opener by scoring his first century against Rajasthan Royals.
Vijay scored 441 runs while opening the innings for CSK in the 2009/10 season. Murali Vijay also scored the youngest century for Chennai at the age of 25. The previous record was also in the name of Vijay, who scored his first IPL century at the age of 26.
At the end of the 2021 season, Gaikwad scored 70 against Delhi Capitals in the qualifiers and combined for 61 with Faf du Plessis in the final, helping CSK reach 192, which was enough to win.
Rituraj Gaikwad was born on 31 January 1997 in Pune, Maharashtra. Gaikwad made his first-class debut for Maharashtra in the 2016–17 Ranji Trophy season and made his List A and domestic T20 debut in the same year.
In 2023, he was signed by the Pune-based franchise for the Maharashtra Premier League (MPL) for Rs 14.8 crore for three years. The franchise was later named Puneri Bappa and named Gaikwad as their captain for the inaugural season.
Gaikwad has played 52 matches so far in his IPL career and has scored 1797 runs at an average of 39.07, with his highest IPL score being 101 not out. Chennai retained him for Rs 6 crore in the IPL auction 2024.
Gaikwad was the captain of the Indian team that won the gold medal at the 2022 Asian Games in Hangzhou, China last year. In November 2023, he was named vice-captain for the first three matches of the T20 series against Australia.
However, apart from this success, it will not be easy for Gaikwad to fill Dhoni’s place. A similar attempt by CSK to name Ravindra Jadeja as Dhoni’s successor had failed a few seasons ago. In such a situation, there is going to be a lot of pressure on Gaikwad.
Only time will tell whether Gaikwad will be successful in achieving what Jadeja could not.
