Mumbai (Best Hindu News): Indian middle-order batsman Shreyas Iyer has been ruled out of the first Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia from February 9 due to a groin injury.
ESPN Cricinfo gave this information on Wednesday quoting sources in the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
After the Test series played in Bangladesh in December, Iyer was given an injection due to swelling in his back. Iyer was ruled out of the New Zealand ODI series due to non-healing of the injury and went to the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru for rehab.
Iyer was to leave for Nagpur from Bengaluru for the Test series starting on February 9, but according to sources, he has not been declared fully fit by the NCA and has been advised to extend the rehab.
ESPN Cricinfo said that Iyer’s rehab has been extended with caution and his problem is not serious. He can join the team for the second Test starting in Delhi from 17 February. In Iyer’s absence, Shubman Gill or Lokesh Rahul can replace him in the middle order.
Indian team for the first Test against Australia: Rohit Sharma (captain), Lokesh Rahul (vice-captain), Shubman Gill, Cheteshwar Pujara, Virat Kohli, Shrikar Bharat (wicketkeeper), Ishan Kishan (wicketkeeper), Ravichandran Ashwin, Akshar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Ravindra Jadeja, Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj, Umesh Yadav, Jaydev Unadkat, Suryakumar Yadav.
