Jaiswal’s century, India leads by 322 runs

Rajkot. India, after bowling out England for 319 runs in the first innings with the strong performance of its bowlers, scored 155 runs for the second wicket with a brilliant century by young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal (104 retired hurt) and his partner Shubman Gill (65 not out). Thanks to the tremendous partnership, by the end of the third day’s play on Saturday in the second innings, they reached 196 runs for two wickets and took their total lead to 322 runs.

India had got a significant lead of 126 runs in the first innings, which it has crossed 300. England were in the driving seat when the third day’s play started and after the end of the third day’s play, India now has a strong hold. India now has a lead of 322 runs.

Jaiswal, who scored only 10 runs in the first innings, batted aggressively in the second innings and helped India recover from the early dismissal of Rohit Sharma (19). He got a good partner in Gill and both added 155 runs for the second wicket. Jaiswal scored 104 runs in 133 balls with the help of nine fours and five sixes.

After the end of the 44th over of the Indian innings, Yashasvi looked in a lot of pain and decided to retire hurt. New batsman Rajat Patidar was out on the ball of Tom Hartley without opening the account. It was a simple ball but Patidar would have been returned to the pavilion, the short of length ball was in the line of the stumps and he went to pull it with the back foot but it played straight into the hands of Rehan Ahmed.

Gill, along with night watchman Kuldeep Yadav, took out the remaining overs safely. Gill was at the crease after scoring 65 runs in 120 balls with the help of six fours and two sixes and Kuldeep was at the crease after scoring three runs in 15 balls.

Earlier, in the first session of the third day’s play, India took three wickets, including centuryman Ben Duckett, due to which England’s score at lunch was 290/5 in 61 overs. After lunch, India disposed of the guests’ first innings by taking the remaining five wickets for just 29 runs.

Mohammed Siraj was the most successful by taking four wickets for 84 runs while Kuldeep Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja took two wickets each and Ravichandran Ashwin and Jasprit Bumrah took one wicket each.

Even before the first hour had started, India were under pressure with Ravichandran Ashwin withdrawing from the match due to a family medical emergency. Two boundaries later, Bumrah gave India the breakthrough as Joe Root was caught straight at second slip on the reverse ramp. Kuldeep trapped Bairstow LBW on one ball, who ducked in eight balls and the ball turned sharply. Bairstow took review, but the decision did not change.

Duckett did not look comfortable, but he tried hard to reach 150 runs. From the other end, Stokes had to struggle against Bumrah and Kuldeep got different turns. Stokes tried to counter-attack when he bounced, flicked and drove with ease to get the boundary. But Duckett, who was struggling with Kuldeep’s wider line and was unable to find boundaries, reached for a short and wide ball, which he cut straight to cover, ending his innings at 153 off 151 balls. It is over.

At lunch, captain Ben Stokes was unbeaten on 39 runs, wicketkeeper Ben Fox was supporting him on six runs. England scored 83 runs in the first session, but also lost three wickets. After lunch, Jadeja dismissed Stokes for 41 runs and stumped Tom Hartley (9). Siraj reduced the English innings to 319 runs by taking the wickets of Ben Fox (13), Rehan Ahmed (6) and James Anderson (1).
