Japan Open 2023: Prannoy and Srikanth Kidambi will clash in the second stage

Tokyo: India’s top shuttlers HS Prannoy and Kidambi Srikanth advanced to the second round of the Japan Open 2023 after winning their respective matches on Tuesday. Prannoy, ranked world number 10, defeated world number six Li Shi Feng of China 21-17, 21-13. Kidambi got the better of Taiwan’s Chou Tien Chen 21-13, 21-13 in the first leg. Kidambi and Prannoy will face each other in the second leg.
Meanwhile, the Indian women’s doubles pair of Trisha Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand won the first leg, while the mixed doubles pair of Rohan Kapoor and N Sikki Reddy bowed out after losing. Trisha-Gayathri came from behind to defeat Japan’s Sayaka Hobara and Yui Suizu 11-21, 21-15, 21-14 in a thrilling contest that lasted one hour and five minutes. The Rohan-Sikki pair, however, lost 21-18, 9-21, 18-21 after winning the first game in a match that lasted 53 minutes.
Young talent Aakarshi Kashyap went down 21-17 21-17 to world number one Akane Yamaguchi of Japan in a 34-minute women’s singles match. Several Indian players including PV Sindhu, Lakshya Sen and Priyanshu Rajawat will take to the court for their respective first leg matches on Wednesday. Sindhu will face China’s Zhang Yi Man in the first round, while Lakshya and Priyanshu will face each other in the first round.
The men’s doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, who won the Korea Open 2023 title on Sunday, will take on Indonesia’s Leo Rawley Carnando and Daniel Martin in the first round.
