The tribal communities are opposing the demands of the Meitei community. Jackson is from the Meitei tribe but his move was widely criticized and people on social media posted pictures of him raising the Salai Taret flag after destroying several Kuki churches. Jackson took to Twitter late last night to defend himself. He tweeted, ‘Dear fans, I didn’t want to hurt anyone’s sentiments by celebrating with the flag. My intention was to bring to the fore the issues my home state Manipur is facing.
Earlier, talking to ESPN.in after the match, Jackson appealed to the people of his state to maintain peace. Jackson said, ‘This is the flag of my Manipur. I want to tell everyone in India and Manipur to live peacefully and not fight. I want peace. Two months have passed and the clashes are still going on. He said, ‘I do not want such things to happen more and I just want to draw the attention of the government and others for peace. My family is safe but there are many families who have lost their homes and everything. Even for me it is difficult to go back home right now with this situation…even I don’t know what is going to happen. I hope things get fixed soon.
When contacted, All India Football Federation (AIFF) President Kalyan Choubey refused to comment on the issue due to its sensitive nature. Even AIFF did not comment in its official statement. AIFF said, “Jackson Singh Thonaojam has made his position clear on this issue, so we will not pursue this issue further.”
