Rome : Italy’s most prestigious football club, Juventus, has been fined 15 points for incorrect accounting after an appeal hearing by the Italian Football Federation. Following Friday’s sentence, Juventus’ chances of playing in European tournaments next season have ended. Juventus, a record 36-time champion in Italy’s top football competition Serie A, have fallen 25 points behind leaders Napoli following the penalty.
Their chances of making it to the Champions League have also ended as they are 12 points behind the fourth-placed team. Juventus were running third in Serie A before the sentence was imposed. Juventus said it would appeal to Italy’s highest sports court, which is under the Italian Olympic Committee. In addition, former Juventus president Andrea Agnelli and former club CEO Maurizio Arrivabene have been banned from participating in football activities for two years. Nine other members of Juventus’ staff or former board were also banned. All of them had resigned in November following an inquiry into allegations of wrongful account-keeping.
