Montreal (Canada). Madison Keys upset former number one Venus Williams 6-2, 7-5 in the first round of the Canadian Open here.
In the sixth career meeting between the two Americans, Keys earned her fourth win over Williams with a steady performance from the baseline. Seeded 13th in Montreal, Keys has been in excellent form since the start of the grass season. He has finished quarterfinals or better in his last three tournaments, including last week’s Mubadala City DC Open.
Keys put Williams away for most of the match, continuing to lead until she got over the line to win 6–2, 5–4. Williams played her best game in the match, attempting to save seven match points before breaking Keys for the first time.
Keys responded quickly, breaking Williams’ serve for the fourth time in the match and winning in 1 hour and 52 minutes on her ninth match point on Monday night.
Keys will face Italy’s Jasmine Paolini in the second round. Paolini started the day with a 7-6(3), 6-2 win over Donna Vekic.
Meanwhile, 2020 US Open finalist Jennifer Brady’s comeback gathered momentum after holding two match points to defeat Jelena Ostapenko 7-6(7), 0-6, 7-6(8) in the first round.
The win is a full-circle moment for the American, who last faced Ostapenko two years ago in Cincinnati. Brady suffered a knee injury in that match, starting a series of injuries that sidelined him from the tour for nearly two years.
Brady will next face 2022 Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina in the next round.(IANS)
