New Delhi (Uttam Hindu News): Opener Usman Khawaja has been cleared of a possible broken jaw and first concussion test after being hit by Shamar Joseph shortly before Australia secured a decisive 10-wicket win over the West Indies in Adelaide.
Khawaja misjudged a short ball from Shamar and when he tried to turn his head, the ball hit his chest and hit his chin. He was assessed by the on-field doctor before retiring hurt with the scores tied during the first Test.
Khawaja was seen spitting blood before leaving Adelaide Oval with medical staff sending him to hospital for a scan to check there was no structural damage to his jaw.
However, the 37-year-old passed the first concussion test, with his jaw fracture resolved a few hours later, reports cricket.com.au.
However, medical staff will continue to monitor him for symptoms of a delayed concussion and will test him again in 24 hours. If he gets injured, he will be ruled out of the second Test starting at Gabba from January 25.
Australia captain Pat Cummins said, “He looks fine but he will be monitored.”
Renshaw is the most likely player to be Khawaja’s replacement for Brisbane if needed, having pipped Cameron Bancroft and Marcus Harris to make the Test squad following David Warner’s retirement.
