Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday greeted all the athletes participating in the inaugural Khelo India Para Games and described the occasion as “an important step towards inclusion and empowerment”. “On the commencement of the first Khelo India Para Games, my best wishes to all the participating athletes,” Modi said on ‘X’. Sports Minister Anurag Thakur said that India can aim to win 200 medals in the Asian Para Games to be held in 2030, which will be almost double the number of medals played in the recent Games in China. India had won 111 medals including 29 gold medals in the Hangzhou Para Asian Games. The next Asian Para Games will be played in Aichi Nagoya, Japan in 2026.
“If we can win 111 medals in the 2022 Asian Para Games, we can achieve the target of 200 medals in the 2030 Asian Para Games,” Thakur said at the inauguration of the first Khelo India Para Games. Said, “Pehle Khelo India Para Sports is starting a new movement in the sports ecosystem of the country. This is a new step towards providing equal opportunities to all players.
More than 1400 players from 32 states, union territories and Army Sports Board are participating in the Khelo India Para Games. These games will be organized between December 10 and 17 at three venues, Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium, Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium and Karni Singh Shooting Range. Players will try their luck for 276 gold medals in seven sports – athletics, shooting, archery, football, badminton, table tennis and weightlifting. International players like Sheetal Devi, Bhavana Patel and Pramod Bhagat are also participating in these games. Narendra Modi had also sent a special message to the players participating in these games.
