KL Rahul to undergo thigh surgery, out of rest of IPL 2023 and WTC final

New Delhi. Indian opener KL Rahul has said that he will soon undergo surgery on his thigh, which has ruled him out of the Indian team for the rest of the IPL 2023 season and next month’s World Test Championship final against Australia in London.

On 1 May, Lucknow Super Giants captain Rahul was injured while stopping a boundary in the match against Royal Challengers Bangalore and was seen limping off the field. Rahul suffered this injury while fielding in the second over against Bengaluru. In this match, Rahul came to bat at number 11 and was seen struggling to score runs. Lucknow had to face defeat in this match by 18 runs.

In his post on Instagram, Rahul said, “After a thorough discussion with the medical team, it has been concluded that I will have to undergo thigh surgery soon. My focus will be on rehabilitation and recovery in the coming weeks. This decision was difficult but I know this is necessary for a full recovery.”

In IPL 2023, Rahul scored 274 runs at an average of 34.25. He said, “As a team captain, it hurts to be out of the team at such a crucial time but I am sure the players will grasp the opportunity and give their best like Hanesha. I will be watching all the matches and watching you all from the sidelines.” I’ll cheer you up.”

Rahul said, “I will not be with the Indian team at the Oval next month. I will try my best to return to the Indian team. That is my focus and priority.”

In an official statement, the Lucknow franchise said, “Further tests and scans have confirmed that Rahul has a serious right thigh injury.” We will extend all support to KL in this difficult time and ensure his return. However, given the seriousness of the injury, he will be out for a longer period of time, including the rest of the IPL season.”

At present, the Lucknow team is at number two in the points table with five wins in 10 matches. Krunal Pandya will now be seen captaining the team in the coming matches. Krunal was also the captain of Lucknow in the last match against Chennai, which was abandoned due to rain. Rahul had scored 500-plus runs in the last four IPL seasons and by scoring 500 runs this year too, he could become the first Indian to do so five times in a row.

Rahul has not played any T20I for India for almost a year, while he was also dropped from Test matches after the second Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. However, he is still a regular as a wicket-keeper batsman in ODIs. He was also downgraded from Grade A to Grade B in the contract list by the BCCI and was also stripped of the vice-captaincy of the team.

Rahul’s injury means India will have to pick a replacement for him for the WTC final.(IANS)
