New Delhi. The player auction for the Indian Premier League (IPL 2024) will take place in Dubai on December 19. This will be the first time that the auction will be organized outside India.

The 70 vacant roster spots across the 10 franchises will be filled from a pool of 333 cricketers.

Every year, IPL with its high-stakes drama gives Indian and world cricket fans an opportunity to enjoy the thrilling ‘cocktail of cricket’. Therefore, this is the first step in building excitement for the auction 2024.

When and where is IPL 2024 auction?

The player auction for IPL 2024 will take place on December 19 in Dubai, UAE. This program is scheduled to start at 3:30 pm Indian time.

Many might be wondering why this IPL event would be held outside India as just 2 seasons ago the tournament had to be held in the UAE due to pandemic restrictions.

Well, the only reason they were auctioned abroad this year was because it is the wedding season in India. According to an IPL official, hotel availability could be an issue at this time of the year so they decided to hold the auction in Dubai.

Last year, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had also planned to do the same. It was earlier thought that the auction for the last IPL season was going to be held in Istanbul, but the BCCI did not go ahead with it.

This may be a trend in the future. There is a possibility that the upcoming IPL auction will be held outside India in future. This is still something we will have to wait and see.

Auction format and rules for IPL

The IPL auction uses a special accelerated process to filter 333 players for 70 spots across 10 teams.

Players are ready to compete

Overall, 333 cricketers from 14 countries are entering the IPL 2024 auction pool. Most of the 214 are Indian players while 119 are foreign players. The auction list also includes two players from associate member countries.

Based on experience, 116 capped and 215 uncapped players will compete. The maximum reserve price of 23 elite players is Rs 2 crore.

Gujarat Titans will enter the auction with the biggest budget of Rs 38.15 crore. They are followed by Sunrisers Hyderabad (Rs 37.85 crore) and Punjab Kings (Rs 32.2 crore). All teams will have to spend at least 75% of their purse during the auction.

Chennai Super Kings, on the other hand, have the lowest auction budget at Rs 20.45 crore. However, they also have the fewest player slots to fill as they only have four.

Each team has places

Kolkata Knight Riders have the maximum number of vacancies of 12 players. Punjab Kings and Lucknow Super Giants are not far behind with 11 and 10 slots available respectively. Again, Chennai Super Kings have the least number of openings with four.

All 10 franchises combined have 70 spots to reach the maximum squad capacity by the end of this year’s auction.

There are still a lot of spots left to be filled during the auction. This is something that many fans are really waiting for as the outcome of the auction will let them know how their favorite teams will perform in the next season.

Most Distinguished Player

The highest echelon of marquee names has a reserve valuation of Rs 2 crore. Most of these proven superstars will likely attract intense bidding wars between purse-rich teams.

This elite class includes English standouts like Australian Mitchell Starc, Cameron Green, Ben Stokes and Sam Curran. India’s Shreyas Iyer and Harshal Patel are also popular names this year.

With the grandest T20 league expanding its scale, the 2024 IPL auction presents a significant opportunity for franchises to plug holes and build a more balanced squad. It will be interesting to see how teams spend their budget this year and whether there will be another bidding war for stars like Sam Curran.
