Colombo: About two years ago, Kuldeep Yadav’s international career seemed to be over and Kolkata Knight Riders did not give him a chance in the entire IPL season. But last year, Kuldeep made a comeback and managed to find a place in the 15-man Indian squad for the World Cup, alongside leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal and veteran off-spinner R.K. Ashwin was preferred. After all, Kuldeep had cemented his claim by taking 23 wickets in 13 ODIs. How did this dice turn? Kuldeep’s childhood coach Kapil Pandey attributes this to his commitment.
Kapil Pandey says, ‘Her heart was broken. Leave aside playing for India, he was not even getting a chance in KKR. It is important for a bowler to keep working on his skills, but he did not give up and practiced long hours with me in the nets. We worked on many things.

Any cricketer needs a mentor who has experience in this situation and for Kuldeep, that person was Sunil Joshi. The former India left-arm spinner taught Kuldeep valuable tricks at the National Cricket Academy.
Joshi said, ‘I was in the selection committee when Kuldeep was going through a bad phase. It was sad to see such a talented bowler like this. We met at NCA and chalked out a strategy ahead. We were working on technical aspects only so that he could bowl a little quicker, his action needed improvement, his focus had also gone astray, but now you must be seeing the change. In IPL too, Kuldeep got the benefit of coming from KKR to Delhi Capitals.
