Kumble spoke in support of wrestlers

New Delhi (Best Hindu News): Former India cricketer Anil Kumble on Tuesday condemned the Delhi Police’s handling of the protesting wrestlers and said he is looking forward to an early resolution of the problem.

Kumble tweeted, “Extremely sorry to hear about the ill-treatment meted out to our wrestlers on 28th May. Anything can be solved with proper communication. Hoping for an early resolution.”

It is noteworthy that many famous wrestlers of the country including Bajrang Punia, Sakshi Malik and Vinesh Phogat are demanding the arrest of former Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh.

The wrestlers, who have been on protest at Jantar Mantar for nearly a month, had on Sunday decided to march to Parliament and hold a Mahila Mahapanchayat during the inauguration ceremony of the newly constructed Parliament building. The wrestlers, however, could not proceed beyond the Jantar Mantar road and the police uprooted the tents of the wrestlers from the protest site after detaining all the protesters.

Expressing dismay over police treatment of wrestlers, International Olympic Committee Athletes’ Commission member Abhinav Bindra, Tokyo Olympics gold medalist Neeraj Chopra, Indian football team captain Sunil Chhetri and Birmingham Commonwealth Games silver medalist Murali Sreeshankar have also tweeted. Neeraj commented on a video of the wrestlers being taken into custody on Sunday, “Very sad to see this. There might be a better way to deal with it.”

Describing the Delhi Police’s treatment of the wrestlers as barbaric, Sreeshankar tweeted, “Extremely barbaric! Our champions did not deserve this treatment. As an athlete dreaming of reaching the Olympics, this picture will leave a deep wound (on my mind).”

Chhetri tweeted late on Sunday night, “What is the need to mindlessly drag our wrestlers? This is not the way to treat someone. I really hope that this whole situation is assessed the way it should be.”

Significantly, Brij Bhushan is facing allegations of sexual exploitation of seven women wrestlers including a minor. Delhi Police has registered two FIRs against Brij Bhushan after taking statements of all the victims, one of which is related to POCSO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences). However, Brij Bhushan, the Bharatiya Janata Party MP from Kaiserganj Lok Sabha seat, has not been arrested yet.

Meanwhile, after being manhandled by the police, the wrestlers decided to go to Haridwar on Tuesday to immerse their medals in the Ganges.
