Kurash player accused of murderous attack on rival player in Olympic Bhawan

Drama prevailed at the Olympic Bhawan on Saturday as two factions of the Kurash Association of India (KAI) arrived with different lists of names for the Asian Games and accused top athlete Neha Thakur of attacking her 52kg rival. Both the KAI factions went to the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) to submit the names as the Asian Games Organizing Committee had fixed July 15 as the last date for sending the entries.

Interestingly, both the factions have Congress leader Jagdish Tytler as their patron and also have the same registration number under the Societies Act, but they have two different sets of office bearers. Neha claimed that her name was there in the list of one group but her name was missing in the list of the other group. Neha’s name figured in the list of the group headed by Rajan Varghese. The president of the second group is Dharmendra Malhotra. Neha said, “I had participated in the trials of both the groups and qualified for the Asian Games. I was constantly being assured that my name would figure in the Asian Games list but I knew it would not happen. Another group is taking money from players to send them to the Asian Games. Neha claimed that she was attacked for the second time.

“This is the second time that girl in my weight class attacked me. Earlier on June 25, even during the trials, he tried to attack me. I had also informed about this to the IOA. Today he tried to kill me.” Tried to contact IOA officials in this regard but did not get revert. Neha said that she would lodge an FIR at the Malviya Nagar police station. India won one silver and one bronze medal in Kurash at the 2018 Asian Games. Kurash is a form of wrestling in which one has to claim victory by holding the legs of the opponent and pinning him to the ground on his back.
