Kowloon (Hong Kong). Indian shuttler Lakshya Sen withdrew two hours before his men’s singles opening round match at the Hong Kong Open Super 500 badminton tournament on Wednesday, giving a walkover to his rival Su Li Yang of Chinese Taipei.
In the absence of world No. 7 HS Prannoy, eighth seed Lakshya was the highest-ranked Indian shuttler in men’s singles at the tournament.
After losing in the first round of the China Open, Lakshya was considered the biggest bet for the title in the absence of Prannoy, Kidambi Srikanth and PV Sindhu. The trio will be part of the national camp for the Asian Games 2022.
After consecutive exits in the first round of the tournament, Lakshya is likely to lose his 8th position in the BWF World Rankings. He last won a tournament at the Canada Open Super 500 in July.
Meanwhile, women’s doubles pair of Ashwini Ponnappa and Tanisha Crasto (ranked 50) reached the pre-quarterfinals with a 21-19, 21-19 win over world No. 21 Chinese Taipei pair of Li Chia Hsien and Teng Chun Hsun. . ,
In mixed doubles, Ashwini, partnering B Sumeth Reddy, lost to Malaysian pair Cheng Tang Jie and Toh Ee Wei 16-21, 21-16, 18-21 in three games.
In men’s doubles, Krishna Prasad Garaga and Vishnuvardhan Gaur Panjala had to bow out in the first round after losing 14-21, 19-21 to the Korean pair of Ko Sung Hyun and Shin Bak Cheol.
World number 28 Priyanshu Rawat also made an early exit after losing 13-21, 14-21 to Japan’s Kanta Tsuneyama.
In women’s singles, Akarshi Kashyap lost to Yvonne Lee 18-21,10-21 in the opening round, while Malvika Bansod will face world No. 17 Zhang Yi Man of China.
