Drag-flicker Harmanpreet Singh and midfielder Hardik Singh will continue to play the role of captain and vice-captain respectively for the Asian Games.
Sanjay will replace Jugraj in the team, while Lalit and Abhishek will come in place of Akashdeep and Karti. The team includes two goalkeepers in the form of PR Sreejesh and Krishna Bahadukar Pathak. Meanwhile, goalkeeper Savita Punia will lead the 18-member Indian women’s hockey team at the Asian Games. Experienced Sushila Chanu, Baljit Kaur and Jyoti Chhatri, who were part of the team on the tour of Germany and Spain last month, have not found a place in the team.
The teams were officially announced during the farewell ceremony organized by Hockey India here for the Asian Games teams. In the 12-team men’s competition, India have been clubbed with defending Asian Games champions Japan, arch-rivals Pakistan, Bangladesh, Singapore and Uzbekistan in Pool A while Korea, Malaysia, China, Oman, Thailand and Indonesia are in Pool B.
The Indian women’s team, which won a silver medal at the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta, has been placed in Pool A along with Korea, Malaysia, Hong Kong and Singapore while defending champions Japan, hosts China, Thailand, Kazakhstan and Indonesia are in Pool B. The Indian men’s team will begin their campaign against Uzbekistan on September 24 while the women’s team will take on Singapore in their opening match on September 27.

Women’s Team: Savita (Captain), Bichu Devi Kharibam, Dipika, Lalremsiami, Monika, Navneet Kaur, Neha, Nisha, Sonika, Udita, Ishika Chowdhary, Deep Grace Ekka (Vice-Captain), Vandana Katariya, Sangeeta Kumari, Vaishnavi Vittal Phalke, Nikki Pradhan , Sushila Chanu and Salima Tete.
