New Delhi: Sunrisers Hyderabad leg spinner Wanindu Hasaranga has been ruled out of IPL 2024 due to pain in the heel of his left foot. Hasaranga has not yet joined the Hyderabad team and ESPNcricinfo has learned that Sri Lanka Cricket has informed the BCCI about his unavailability this season. The replacement for Hasaranga has not been confirmed yet but it is learned that Hyderabad is thinking about it.
He suffered pain in his left heel while playing a limited overs series for Sri Lanka in Bangladesh in March, which was treated by Sri Lanka Cricket’s medical staff. He was going to go abroad to seek expert advice before getting permission from Sri Lanka Cricket to play in the IPL. Hyderabad head coach Daniel Vettori said on Thursday that Hasaranga had consulted a specialist in Dubai, following which the news of his withdrawal from the tournament came out. Hasaranga was bought by Hyderabad for Rs 1.5 crore in the auction held in December.
Last season, he was a part of Royal Challengers Bangalore, who was bought for Rs 10.75 crore in the 2022 auction. He had a great 2022 season where he took 26 wickets at an economy of 7.54, but in 2023, playing only eight matches, he was able to take only nine wickets at an economy of 8.9. Hasaranga will be a key part of the Sri Lankan team in the T20 World Cup to be held in the United States and West Indies from June 1, if he can recover till the tournament.
Earlier this month, Hasaranga was suspended from Sri Lanka’s Test series against Bangladesh after he received eight demerit points for violating Article 2.8 in the third ODI against Bangladesh. Meanwhile, he had withdrawn his Test retirement, if he had not done so, he would have had to miss some matches of the T20 World Cup. However, Sri Lanka Cricket had issued a statement saying that Hasaranga had not withdrawn his Test retirement due to missing the T20 World Cup matches. He had said that on March 16, Hasaranga had written an email asking him to return to Test cricket because his fitness level had improved.
