Mumbai (Best Hindu News): Indian opener Smriti Mandhana became the most expensive player of the tournament as she went to Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) for Rs 3.4 crore in the Women’s Premier League (WPL) auction on Monday.
In the auction held at the Jio Convention Centre, Mumbai Indians started the auction with a bid of 50 lakhs, but after a lot of struggle, RCB included Mandhana in their squad.
After becoming a part of RCB, Mandhana said, “We have been watching the men’s IPL auction. It is a huge moment for women to have an auction like this. The legacy of RCB is huge, they have created a huge fan-base. Hopefully together we can make a great team. Hello Bengaluru, excited to wear the red and gold and aim for the cup.”
Mandhana, who has been a key part of the Indian team over the years, made her T20 International debut in 2013 at the age of 16. She holds the record for the fastest fifty by an Indian woman in T20 Internationals when she scored a 24-ball fifty against New Zealand in February 2019. Mandhana (2651 runs in 112 matches) is second only to skipper Harmanpreet Kaur in the list of Indian women’s most T20 run-scorers.
Meanwhile, RCB also included experienced players like New Zealand’s Sophie Devine (50 lakhs), Australia’s Ellyse Perry (1.7 crores) and India’s Renuka Singh (1.5 crores) in their squad.
The first edition of WPL is to be held from March 4. All the matches of the tournament will be played at DY Patil Stadium and Brabourne Stadium.
