Manoj Tiwary announces retirement from all forms of cricket

Kolkata: Former India batsman Manoj Tiwary on Thursday announced his retirement from all forms of cricket, bringing an end to his tumultuous career. Tiwary played 12 One Day Internationals and three T20 Internationals between 2008 and 2015. He entered politics while being an active cricketer and became Minister of State for Sports and Youth Affairs in West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s cabinet. But in the 2022-23 domestic season, the 37-year-old returned to play for Bengal and led the team to the final where they lost to Saurashtra at the Eden Gardens. This was Tiwary’s last first-class match.

Announcing his retirement, Tiwary wrote in his Instagram post, “Goodbye to the game of cricket. ” He wrote, ‘This game gave me everything, I mean everything that I never even dreamed of. It started at a time when there were various challenges in my life. “Tiwari wrote,” I will always be grateful to this game and to God who has always been with me. The left-handed batsman scored 287 runs in 12 ODIs, including a century against the West Indies in Chennai in December 2011.

Tiwary ended his first-class career with 9908 runs, just 92 runs short of the 10,000-run mark, and his illustrious 19-year career also included 29 hundreds. He made his debut under the captaincy of Deep Dasgupta against Delhi at the Eden Gardens in 2004. He scored 5581 runs in 169 List A matches at an average of 42.28. Thanking his childhood coach Manabendra Ghosh, former teammates and his family, Tiwary said, “Manabendra Ghosh, my fatherly coach, has been the pillar of my cricketing journey. Had it not been for him, I would not have reached this far in the world of cricket. Thank you sir and get well soon. ,

He said, “Thanks to my mother and father, both of them never pressurized me to concentrate on studies, rather motivated me to continue playing cricket. Thanks to my wife who has always supported me since the time she came into my life. ,
