Gkeberha. India’s left-handed batsman Tilak Verma said the spells of South African spinners Tabraiz Shamsi and captain Aiden Markram played a decisive role in swinging the second T20 match in their favour. He said that if this pair had not been there, the result could have been different.

Markram took 1-29, while Shamsi returned with economical figures of 1-18 in South Africa’s five-wicket win at Gkeberha.

Tilak Verma said after the match, “I think the wicket was a bit slow when we batted. Especially with the new ball, it was seaming a bit. After that, when Markram and Shamsi were bowling, it was moving a bit. So, the spells that Markram and Shamsi bowled went in their favour. Otherwise, we could have reached 200 or more than 200.”

He also felt that India gave away too many runs in the powerplay. When South Africa was chasing 152 runs in 15 overs. Then India was facing difficulty in bowling due to rain and wet outfield.

Tilak said, “I think in the powerplay, we gave away a few extra runs, but after that we came back strongly. But due to the wet outfield, the ball was not getting that much grip. But actually we batted well. We were able to hold on to our Will stick to the basics. We have to plan better regarding our bowling.”

2023 has been the year when Verma made his T20 debut for India on the West Indies tour in August. Verma, who has played T20I 14 times in West Indies, Ireland, China (Asian Games), India and now South Africa, feels that the experience in different conditions has taught him very good lessons.
