Jeddah. Hamad Medjedovic concluded his successful season by winning the Next Gen ATP Finals trophy, where he won the first five-set final in the history of the tournament after losing two match points in the fourth set against Arthur Fils.
The Serbian hit the ball big, won 88 percent (61/69) of his first serve points and converted his third match point to send the 19-year-old Frenchman 3-4(6) after two hours and 11 minutes, reports ATP. Defeated 4-1, 4-2, 3-4(9), 4-1.
It was a great end to the season for Serbia after Novak Djokovic won a record seventh ATP Finals title in Turin earlier this month. The world No. 1 has been sending messages of support to Medjedovic this week.
Medjedovic said, “Two of us are from Serbia. He won big Masters, real Masters, and I won Next Gen. Obviously it’s a big deal and I’m happy to follow in his footsteps in some way.”
Medjedovic did not lose a single match en route to becoming the first Serbian to win the tournament, taking home a tournament-record $514,000 in prize money.
The 20-year-old, ranked No. 110 in the ATP Rankings, is the lowest-ranked champion in tournament history, while he is the sixth Next Gen ATP Finals titlist, joining the ranks of top 10 stars Carlos Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner and Stefanos Tsitsipas Is.
