Men’s Central Contracts: Rahane, Bhuvneshwar’s career over in cricket?

New Delhi | The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) late on Sunday night announced the list of central contracts for the players of the men’s team for the period October 2022 to September 2023. While four Grade A+ players will take home an amount of Rs 7 crore each, five players have been placed in Grade A, who are worth Rs 5 crore each. Six players have been placed in Grade B contracts worth Rs 3 crore, while there are 11 players in Grade C contracts worth Rs 1 crore.

Jadeja, Akshar, Hardik among the big players:

Despite missing cricket since September 2022 due to a knee injury, left-arm spin all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja has been promoted to an A+ contract, alongside skipper Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah.

Ever since he returned to the Indian Test and ODI set-up, Jadeja has produced significant performances with bat and ball and won player of the match awards in the team’s first two Test victories over Australia in Nagpur and New Delhi. Due to his all-round utility, he has been given the highest grade in the central contract.

Axar Patel and Hardik Pandya are other big players who are being rewarded for their consistent performances for the Indian team. While Akshar, who has been impressive across all formats, has moved from B to Grade A, Hardik’s resurgence as a white-ball player and captaining India on several occasions has seen him move from C to Grade A respectively. has been promoted.

Shubman Gill and Suryakumar Yadav are the other big players, who are moving from C to Grade B. Gill has scored centuries in all formats of the game, including a double century against New Zealand in Hyderabad. Suryakumar, on the other hand, was the best batsman in T20s in 2022 and earned his maiden Test cap with a stellar performance apart from maintaining that form in the shortest format.

All-rounder Shardul Thakur has moved from grade B to C. Thakur has got sporadic opportunities to play for India across formats after Hardik returned to his top best in white-ball matches.

No room for Rahane, Ishant, Bhubaneswar:

From the list, it looks like it is the end of cricket career for Ajinkya Rahane, Ishant Sharma and Bhuvneshwar Kumar. Rahane was dropped from the Test team after the end of the tour of South Africa.

Ishant, on the other hand, hardly featured in the last domestic season and is with Delhi Capitals in IPL 2023.

Bhuvneshwar, on the other hand, hasn’t featured in T20Is for India since the New Zealand series in November last year. Other notable omissions include Mayank Agarwal, Hanuma Vihari, Wriddhiman Saha and Deepak Chahar.

But by giving him a central contract, it looks like the much-experienced Dhawan is still in the Indian team’s ODI World Cup squad plans, as Jasprit Bumrah, who hasn’t played since September last year, is still nursing a back injury. He is recovering and that too in A+ category.(IANS)
