San Francisco. Meta has started blocking news on Facebook and Instagram in Canada to comply with the country’s new Online News Act.
The company said it has begun the process of ending News availability in Canada.
“These changes are rolling out starting today and will be rolled out to everyone using Facebook and Instagram in Canada over the next few weeks,” Meta said in a statement late Tuesday.
The Online News Act requires big tech companies like Meta and Google to negotiate with publishers and pay for their news content.
Following Meta’s decision, news links and content posted by Canadian news publishers and broadcasters will no longer be viewable in Canada.
The tech giant said, “We are identifying news outlets based on the Online News Act. News publishers and broadcasters outside Canada will continue to be able to post news links and content, however, that content will not be viewable by people in Canada.
Meta said this is a business decision and about a year ago, we shared our concerns that the Online News Act would force us to consider whether we should continue to be allowed to share news content on our platforms. Needed
“This law is based on the erroneous assumption that Meta unfairly benefits from news content shared on our platform, when the facts are quite the contrary,” the Mark Zuckerberg-run company said.
News organizations willingly share content on Facebook and Instagram to expand their audience.
Meta argued, “On the contrary, we know that the people who use our platform do not come to us for news.”
