Mumbai Indians have registered their fourth consecutive win in the Women’s Premier League. Mumbai has defeated UP Warriors by eight wickets. With the help of Yastika Bhatia’s 42 runs, Mumbai got off to a great start chasing the target of 160. After that Harmanpreet Kaur and Natalia Sciver Brunt led the team to victory.
Indian captain Harmanpreet’s 33-ball unbeaten innings had nine fours and a six. Siever Brunt (six fours and a six in 31 balls) gave the team victory by hitting a six. With this, the Mumbai team is on top of the table with eight points. UP Warriors needed a win in this match to match Delhi Capitals (six points).
Even half-centuries from UP captain Alyssa Healy (58 runs) and Tahlia McGrath (50 runs) could not save them from defeat. UP Warriors scored 159 runs for six wickets with an 82-run partnership for the third wicket between Healy and McGrath. Mumbai Indians won comfortably by scoring 164 runs for two wickets in 17.3 overs.
UP Warriors squandered a great chance in the third over when Simran Sheikh dropped the catch of Yastika Bhatia (42 runs). Drama happened in the fifth over when Sophie Ecclestone appealed for Hayley Matthews leg before, which was turned down by the on-field umpire. Then UP Warriors captain Healy took a review after asking Ecclestone, on which the third umpire gave out. But Mathews stayed put and took the review on which he was given ‘not out’.
Wicket-keeper batsman Yastika was in good touch and was scoring runs fast. While Haley Mathews standing at the other end was batting restrained. Thanks to these two, Mumbai scored 51 runs in six overs without losing a wicket in the powerplay. In the next over, Bhatia hit Rajeshwari Gaikwad for a six over long on, but was dismissed in the very next ball.
Ecclestone caught Mathews (12 runs) on his own ball in the eighth over. After ten overs, Mumbai Indians had scored 72 runs for two wickets. In the 11th over, there was another ‘drama’ when Harmanpreet survived being dismissed by Anjali Saravani as the ball hit the stumps but the bails did not fall. Luck was also with Mumbai Indians.
Harmanpreet and Siever Brunt initially took some time to settle down and showed aggression. The team had scored 123 runs for two wickets in 15 overs and needed 37 runs to win. In the next over, Harmanpreet’s one six and three sixes added 19 runs to Mumbai Indians’ account.
