India’s veteran tennis player Rohan Bopanna and his Australian partner Matthew Ebden defeated Sam Verbeek of the Netherlands and John-Patrick Smith of Australia to reach the third men’s doubles semi-final of the year at the Miami Open here. Bopanna and Ebden, who won the Australian Open title this year, came back after losing the first set and won 3-6 7-6 10-7.
The victory will help world number two Bopanna, 44, stay in the top 10 of the ATP doubles rankings and qualify directly for the Paris Olympics to be held in July-August. The cut-off date for considering the ranking to qualify directly for the Paris Olympics is June 10. The top seeded pair of Bopanna and Ebden made a lot of unforced errors in the first set but won the second set by winning points at crucial moments and took the match to a tiebreaker and then won.
In the semi-finals, Bopanna and Ebden will face the winner of the match between Spain’s Marcel Granollers and Argentina’s Horacio Zeballos and Britain’s Lloyd Glasspool and the Netherlands’ Jean-Julien Rojer. Bopanna and Ebden had earlier played in the finals of Australian Open and Adelaide Open this year.
