Announcing its new Copilot copyright commitment, the tech giant said that if a third party sues a commercial customer for copyright infringement for using Microsoft’s Copilot or the output they generate, we will defend the customer. and will pay the amount of any adverse judgment or settlement resulting from the lawsuit as long as they use the guardrails and content filters built into our products.
Brad Smith, vice president and president of Microsoft, said some customers are concerned about the risk of IP infringement claims when using outputs produced by generative AI.
“This makes sense, given recent public inquiries from writers and artists about how their own work could be used in conjunction with AI models and the service,” Smith said in a blog post late Thursday. Used to be.”
“The new commitment extends our existing Intellectual Property Indemnity support to the commercial Copilot service and builds on our previous AI customer commitments,” he said.
The company said it has built significant guardrails into its AI Copilot to help respect authors’ copyrights.

The Copilot copyright commitment extends Microsoft’s existing IP indemnification to include the output they produce, specifically for the paid versions of the Microsoft commercial Copilot service and Bing Chat Enterprise.
This includes Microsoft 365 CoPilot that brings generative AI to Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and more.
“Today’s announcement is a first step,” Smith said. “Like all new technologies, AI raises legal questions that our industry will need to work through with a wide range of stakeholders.”
