Mirabai Chanu’s campaign ended disappointingly, finished fourth

India’s ace weightlifter Mirabai Chanu’s Asian Games campaign ended on a disappointing note as the Olympic medalist injured herself and finished fourth in the women’s 49kg event on Saturday. Chanu was under pressure after a disappointing performance in the snatch and was trying to lift 117 kg in the clean and jerk which could have helped the Tokyo Olympics silver medalist lifter win the bronze medal but failed to do so twice. In the final attempt she fell on her back and the coaching staff had to carry her off the stage. Chanu lifted a total of 191 kg (83 kg + 108 kg) which placed her in fourth position.

Her cabinet is only lacking an Asiad medal and she was trying to complete it this time. In the snatch category, he started with a lift of 83 kg but this was his only valid attempt in this category. She failed in two attempts to lift 86 kg. In the final snatch she could not get up from the ‘squat position’ and fell forward due to which the ‘bar’ fell on her back. Chanu finished sixth in snatch and three lifters lifted 90 kg or more. Two-time world champion Jiang Huihua of China lifted a best snatch weight of 94 kg, which was 11 kg more than Chanu’s effort and is also a Games record. Chanu had to compensate for her weak snatch in the clean and jerk competition, in which she could not do well either.

North Korea’s Ri Sung Gum defended her Asiad title with a world record of 124 kg in clean and jerk. His total weight was 216 kg (92 kg +124 kg). She defeated local favorite Huihua 213 kg (94 kg + 119 kg) who won the silver medal. Thanyathon Sukcharo of Thailand won the bronze medal with a lift of 199 kg (90 kg + 109 kg).
