Moeen Ali to play for Joburg Super Kings, teams announce players for 2024 season

Johannesburg. England off-spin all-rounder Moeen Ali will play for the Joburg Super Kings in the 2024 edition of the SA20 as six teams have announced their retained and pre-signed players ahead of the second edition. The league is scheduled to happen in January next year.

Last season, Ali turned out for Sharjah Warriors in the inaugural edition of the ILT20 as its dates clashed with the SA20 this year. But now, as it stands, Ali will be playing for the Jo’burg team in the SA20.

Joburg have retained the services of opener Faf du Plessis and pacer Gerald Coetzee to lead their attack. Defending champions Sunrisers Eastern Cape have brought in the England duo of left-handed batsman Dawid Malan and left-arm spinner Liam Dawson, while retaining skipper Aiden Markram and seam bowler Otneil Baartman.

The Durban Supergiants have retained their dynamic opening pair of Quinton de Kock and West Indies’ Kyle Mayers, along with England left-arm seamer Reece Topley and South African spinner Prenlan Subrian. They have acquired top-order batsman Bhanuka Rajapaksa from Sri Lanka and fast bowler Naveen-ul-Haq from Afghanistan.

For Season 2 of the SA20, the salary cap has been increased to Rand 39.1 million per team. With pre-signings effectively closed and finalised, teams have until 31 July to trade South African players, retain overseas players and buy cricketers under both the South African and overseas franchises.
