He told PTI, ‘Shreyas Iyer is injured, KL Rahul is recovering from injury. I hope they all make a comeback in the team (in time for the World Cup). So all this talk (for the World Cup) about new players coming into the team, they will not get a chance in the team. Your (Team India’s) XI is fully prepared. Kaif said, ‘When Iyer returns, he will play at number four. You have Shubman Gill and captain Rohit Sharma (as openers), you have Virat Kohli at number three, you have (Shreyas) Iyer at number four, you have KL Rahul at number five.
He said, ‘Hardik Pandya will play at number six, (Ravindra) Jadeja at number seven, Akshar Patel or Shardul Thakur at number eight depending on the pitch condition. At number nine you will have Kuldeep Yadav… he has a good ODI record and at number 10 and 11 you will have two fast bowlers, Mohammed Shami and Bumrah.
Kaif said, ‘Even Siraj might not get a place in the XI. So while Siraj will be difficult to adjust, the new players we are talking about may not get a chance in this World Cup. Kaif said his reasoning was based on the fact that seniors will get their first chance to break into the team and players like Sanju Samson, Ishan Kishan and Suryakumar Yadav will get a chance before some of the new faces.
