Mumbai: Musheer Khan broke the 29-year-old record of the great Sachin Tendulkar by becoming the youngest Mumbai batsman to score a century in the Ranji Trophy final against Vidarbha at the Wankhede Stadium here. At the age of 19 years and 14 days, Musheer scored a century in 255 balls in the second innings of Mumbai in the final.
A month before his 22nd birthday, Sachin held the record of being the youngest Mumbai batsman to score a century in the Ranji final by scoring two centuries against Punjab in the 1994/95 season, which helped Mumbai win the title.
Incidentally, at the time Musheer achieved this feat. At that time Sachin was also present in the stands and was watching this young player breaking his record. In the second day’s play, Mumbai has taken a lead of 119 runs in the first innings. Musheer and captain Ajinkya Rahane handled Mumbai’s faltering innings.
Both the batsmen completed their respective half-centuries, taking the score to 141 runs for two wickets. After Rahane was out for 73 on the third day, Musheer continued to score runs along with Shreyas Iyer. In the 90th over of the match, Musheer scored his second first-class century in three matches. However, his brilliant innings ended at the score of 136 when he was out LBW to Harsh Dubey. Earlier, Sarfaraz Khan’s younger brother Musheer had converted his maiden first-class century into a double century during the quarter-final match against Baroda.
He became the second youngest batsman from Mumbai to make this record after Wasim Jaffer. Mumbai have won the Ranji Trophy title a record 41 times in 47 finals and are set to claim another championship in their 48th final. Meanwhile, Vidarbha are playing their third Ranji final, having previously won in consecutive seasons between 2017-19.
