The stadium is special for Team India
This ground has always been special for India. India and Pakistan fought here in 1987. In that match, Little Master Sunil Gavaskar became the first batsman in the world to score 10,000 runs in Tests. In the first Test in 1983, Kapil Dev dismissed 9 West Indies batsmen for 83 runs. This is the best performance by an Indian pacer in a Test innings to date.
In 1994, Kapil Dev became the highest Test wicket-taker at this ground. He broke Richard Hadlee’s record of 431 wickets by dismissing Hashan Tillakaratne of Sri Lanka. He was the highest wicket-taker in Tests for 6 years. In 1999, Sachin Tendulkar scored the first double century of his Test career here against New Zealand. Ravichandran Ashwin completed his 400 wickets in Tests here.
Test was over in 140.2 overs
In February 2021, the Day-Night Test was played here between India and England. It was the first match at the ground after the renovation. That match was over in just 140.2 overs and about a day and a half. India had scored 145 runs after bowling out England for 112 runs in the first innings. In the second innings, the English team could only score 81 runs. India won the match by 10 wickets scoring 49 runs in 7.4 overs. Akshar Patel took 11 wickets and Ashwin took 7 wickets.
