Dubai . Afghanistan fast bowler Naveen Ul Haq has been banned from the UAE International League T20 for 20 months for violating his player agreement with Sharjah Warriors.

Before the second season, Naveen was given a retention notice by the team after taking 11 wickets in nine matches at an average of 24.36.

However, Naveen refused to sign it. The Sharjah Warriors went to the International League T20 to try to solve the problem.

When Naveen refused to sign the notice, the team contacted league officials. International League T20 tried to talk to Naveen but no solution was found between the two.

The league’s disciplinary committee included chief executive David White, security and anti-corruption chief Colonel Azam and Emirates Cricket Board member Zayed Abbas. This committee listened to both the Warriors and Naveen and examined the evidence.

Then, the league’s three-member disciplinary committee comprising league chief executive David White, head of security and anti-corruption Azam and member Emirates Cricket Board Zayed Abbas heard both the sides, i.e. Naveen and Sharjah Warriors, separately. After examining the evidence, the panel ruled on Naveen a 20-month ban.

David White, the league’s chief executive, said: “We are not proud to make this announcement but expect all parties to adhere to their contractual commitments and recognize that non-compliance could result in loss to the other party “Unfortunately, Naveen failed to comply with his contractual obligations with the Sharjah Warriors and the league had no option but to ban him for 20 months.”

Naveen’s ban will last till August 2025, causing him to miss the next two seasons of the league. The second season of the competition is scheduled to take place in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in the 2024 January–February window.

Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Lucknow Super Giants retained Naveen ahead of the IPL 2024 mini-auction. Naveen is likely to join India for Afghanistan’s tour in January 2024, which includes three T20s.
