Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra expressed surprise on Monday when he learned that his on-field rival and friend Arshad Nadeem of Pakistan was struggling to acquire a new javelin. Nadeem had said a few weeks ago, “It has now reached the level where the javelin has been damaged and I have asked the national federation and my coach to do something about it before the Paris Olympics. I got this javelin when I started competing in international competitions in 2015…For an international athlete aiming to win a medal at the Olympic Games, you need proper equipment and training facilities.”

Chopra, who shares a good relationship with Nadeem off the field, said it is really hard to believe that the Pakistani athlete is having to struggle so much to get a new javelin. Neeraj Chopra told SAI media on Monday- “It is hard to believe that he is struggling to get a new javelin. Given his game, it shouldn’t be a big issue at all.”

Chopra further said- “It cannot be that Nadeem does not have the means to buy a spear. He is a champion and might be doing some brand endorsements. I think he made a little money too. But having said this, his government can see the need of Arshad Nadeem and support him like my government is doing. ,

He is a top javelin thrower

“Also, Neeraj said- Arshad Nadeem is a top javelin thrower and I believe that javelin manufacturers will be very happy to sponsor him and provide him what he wants. This is an advice from me.” Not only this, with Nadeem’s throw of 90.18m, the 27-year-old Pakistani had set a new record for javelin throw at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham to claim the title. This ended Pakistan’s 60-year wait for a gold medal in the Commonwealth Games. Nadeem had elbow surgery in the UK in December 2022. Last year, she again underwent knee surgery and missed the Hangzhou Asian Games, where Chopra won the gold medal.
