Neeraj Chopra to lead 28-member Indian contingent at World Athletics Championships

Last year, Neeraj Chopra was the only Indian to bag a medal (silver) and overall India has only two medalists in the prestigious competition. This time with a good team, India has a chance to secure its first historical gold.
Sports Ministry announced the team
One surprising thing is that the team was announced by the Sports Ministry instead of the Athletics Federation of India (AFI). The AFI, however, said that most of the participating players have reached Hungary to acclimatize to the weather. Chopra, the defending Diamond League champion, is eyeing a gold medal in Budapest. The 25-year-old Chopra, who was ruled out of the top three tournaments between two Diamond League events due to a hamstring strain during training, is currently training in Mägelingen, Switzerland.

Chopra’s season’s best performance is 88.67m in Doha. It is also the third best performance of the season after Jakub Wadlech (89.51m) of Czech Republic and Julian Weber (88.72m) of Germany. Meanwhile, Asian record holder shot putter Tejinder Pal Singh Toor has pulled out of the prestigious event to be held from August 19 to 27 as he is recovering from a groin injury. He suffered this injury during the Asian Championships in July.

National record holder in high jump Tejaswin Shankar, 800m runner KM Chanda and 20 km walker Priyanka Goswami (national record holder) have also decided not to play in the World Championships and will instead be held in Hangzhou, China on September 23. Will focus on the Asian Games to be held from October to October 8. An AFI source said, “Tejinder is recovering from an injury sustained during the Asian Championships and others have informed that he will focus on the Asian Games instead of the World Championships.”

Toor won the gold medal at the Asian Championships in Bangkok on 14 July with a throw of 20.23m in his second attempt but did not make further attempts due to groin pain. Toor could not take part in the World Championships 2022 also due to a groin injury. Due to this injury, he also had to be ruled out of the Birmingham Commonwealth Games. The mixed 4x400m relay team was also expected by the AFI to qualify for the World Championships, but they were ranked 17th at the end of the qualification deadline on 30 July, while the top 16 teams made it to the relay event.
India could send 4 players in javelin throw
India had the opportunity to field four men in the men’s javelin throw as Chopra was given a wild card entry as the defending Diamond League champions. However, Rohit Yadav withdrew from the competition due to elbow surgery. In a tournament, a country can field three players apart from wild card entry. Players can make it to the tournament through world ranking quota apart from achieving the qualifying level.
