Neeraj Chopra to lead India in World Athletics Championships, tournament to begin on August 19

The 25-year-old Chopra, who was ruled out of the top three tournaments between two Diamond League events due to a hamstring strain sustained during training, is currently training in Mägelingen, Switzerland. Chopra’s season’s best performance is 88.67m in Doha. It is also the third best performance of the season behind Czech Republic’s Jakub Wadlech (89.51m) and Germany’s Julian Weber (88.72m). Meanwhile, Asian record holder shot putter Tejinder Pal Singh Toor has pulled out of the prestigious event scheduled to be held from August 19 to 27 as he is recovering from a groin injury. He suffered this injury during the Asian Championships in July.
National record holder in high jump Tejaswin Shankar, 800m runner KM Chanda and 20 km walker Priyanka Goswami (national record holder) have also decided not to play in the World Championships and will instead be held in Hangzhou, China on September 23. Toor won the gold medal at the Asian Championships in Bangkok on 14 July with a throw of 20.23m in his second attempt but did not make further attempts due to groin pain. Toor could not participate in the World Championships 2022 due to a groin injury. Due to this injury, he also had to be ruled out of the Birmingham Commonwealth Games.
The mixed 4x400m relay team was also expected by the AFI to qualify for the World Championships but they were ranked 17th at the end of the qualification deadline on July 30, while the top 16 teams made it to the relay event. India has fielded three athletes each in the men’s javelin throw, men’s triple jump and men’s 20 km walk.
India had the opportunity to field four men in the men’s javelin throw as Chopra, being the defending Diamond League champion, got a wild card entry. However, Rohit Yadav withdrew from the competition due to elbow surgery. In an event, a country can field three players in addition to wild card entries. Players can make it to the tournament through world ranking quota apart from achieving the qualifying level.

Men: Krishan Kumar (800m), Ajay Kumar Saroj (1500m), Santosh Kumar Tamilaranson (400m Hurdles), Avinash Mukund Sable (3000m Steeplechase), Sarvesh Anil Kushare (High Jump), Jesvin Aldrin (Long Jump) , M Sreeshankar (long jump), Praveen Chitravel (triple jump), Abdullah Abubakar (triple jump), Eldhoj Paul (triple jump), Neeraj Chopra (javelin throw), DP Manu (javelin throw), Kishore Kumar Jena (javelin throw), Akashdeep Singh (20 km walk), Vikas Singh (20 km walk), Paramjit Singh (20 km walk), Ram Babu (35 km walk), Amoj Jacob, Muhammad Ajmal, Mohd Anas, Rajesh Ramesh, Anil Rajalingam and Mizo Chacko Kurian (men’s 4x400m relay).
