New Delhi. Reigning javelin throw Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra will return to high-quality competitors at the Paavo Nurmi Games 2024 in Turku, Finland on June 18, organizers announced on Wednesday.
The Paavo Nurmi Games, held in honor of Finnish long-distance runner Paavo Nurmi, is a top-level world athletics event called Continental Tour Gold.
Organizers posted on Twitter that Olympic champion @Neeraj_Chopra will return to Turku in June and face high-quality competitors. The goal is to host the most competitive javelin throw competition of the summer before the Paris Olympics.
Indian javelin thrower Paavo Nurmi won the silver medal at the 2022 Games with a throw of 89.30 metres. He could not participate in the games last year due to injury.
The annual athletics meet in Turku attracts the world’s top javelin throwing stars every year. This year’s lineup includes Germany’s Max Dehning, who earlier this year became the youngest javelin thrower to cross the coveted 90m mark with a throw of 90.20m, a world-leading mark.
Additionally, reigning European champion and Tokyo Olympics finisher Julian Weber will also take part in the event in Finland.
The Paavo Nurmi Games will be the second event of the year for Chopra as the reigning world champion begins her 2024 campaign with the Doha Diamond League meet on May 10.
