New Delhi, 14 April (Hindustan Times). Olympic champion javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra will begin his season at the Diamond League in Doha on May 5.

After winning the Grand Finale last September, reigning Diamond League champion Chopra will open the season with the first meeting of a 14-leg one-day series with world champion Andersen Peters of Granada and Olympic silver medalist Jakub Wadlje of the Czech Republic.

Chopra, who has a personal best distance of 89.94m which he achieved while finishing second at the Stockholm Diamond League meet last year, is currently training in Turkey. He will be there till May 31.

Due to an injury, Chopra missed the 2022 Doha Diamond League meet, where Peters won the title by recording 93.07m, the fifth longest throw in history. World Championships bronze medalist Wadlejch had finished second with a personal best throw of 90.88m.

Besides Niraj, Peters and Jakob, Doha will also see European champion Julian Weber of Germany, former Olympic champion Keshorn Walcott of Trinidad and Tobago and world champion and 2016 Olympic silver medalist Julius Yego of Kenya.

One of the targets for Chopra this year will be to cross the 90m mark.

“I am also getting close to the 90m mark, so it will mean a lot for me to break that barrier,” he added.

“Last year was a good year for me with a new personal best, world silver medal and Wanda Diamond League victory, this year has brought new opportunities. My target for this summer is to make it to the Asian Games as well as the World Championships. championship and the defense of my Wanda Diamond League title.”

After creating history at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, Chopra won silver at the 2022 World Championships in the USA, where Peters won gold. Neeraj then failed to defend the Commonwealth Games gold, which he won in 2018 in the Birmingham edition, due to injury last year.
