Doha. Tokyo 2020 Olympic javelin champion Neeraj Chopra made a stunning start to the season, winning the Doha Diamond League 2023 with a brilliant throw of 88.67m in his first attempt at the Qatar Sports Club here on Friday.
Known for his explosive starts, Chopra cleared a personal best of 89.94m in his first attempt to come close to the national record.
Czech Republic’s Jakub Wadlech, who had won a silver in Tokyo, threw a season’s best of 88.63m in his second attempt.
The Indian athlete managed a throw of 86.04m in his second attempt. His third attempt was 85.47m but he fouled in the fourth attempt. His last two throws were 84.37m and 86.52m.
Reigning javelin world champion Anderson Peters of Grenada finished third with a throw of 85.88m.
With this number one position, Neeraj Chopra got eight qualification points in the first stage.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has congratulated Neeraj Chopra for securing the first position in the Doha Diamond League.
The Prime Minister tweeted on Saturday:
“First competition of the year and first place. Brilliant performance by Neeraj Chopra at the Doha Diamond League with a world leading throw of 88.67m. Congratulations to him! Best wishes for further endeavours.”
It is noteworthy that instead of medals, points are given to the athletes landing in the Diamond League. The top eight athletes at the end of the Diamond League Series qualify for the Diamond League Finals. This year’s finals will be held in Eugene on September 16 and 17.
The next leg of the Diamond League will take place on May 28 in Rabat, Morocco. Neeraj, on the other hand, will next be seen in action at the Golden Spike Ostrava event on June 27 in the Czech Republic.(IANS)
