Wellington: Off-spinner Nathan Lyon showed off his spin magic and took 10 wickets as Australia defeated New Zealand by 172 runs in the first Test cricket match here on Sunday to take a 1-0 lead in the two-match series. New Zealand had a target of 369 runs. He finished his second innings at 111 runs for three wickets on the morning of the fourth day.

But his batsmen could not stand against Lyon and his entire team was out for 196 runs. Lyon took 6 wickets for 64 runs. In this way he took 10 wickets for 108 runs in the match. For the fifth time in his career, Lyon achieved the feat of taking 10 or more wickets in a match. He played an important inning of 41 runs as a night watchman in Australia’s second innings.

New Zealand had raised their hopes by bowling out Australia for 164 runs in the second innings. Australia had taken a lead of 204 runs in the first innings and thus its total lead was 368 runs. New Zealand’s hopes rested on Rachin Ravindra, who led his innings with 56 runs in the morning. However, he was out after scoring 59 runs in the seventh over of the day. After this, New Zealand’s innings fell apart like a pack of cards. Lyon took his first wicket of the day in the form of Ravindra.

Ravindra gave an easy catch to Cameron Green on the ball taking extra bounce. Three balls later, without opening the account, Tom Blundell was caught by Travis Head at short leg off Lyon’s ball.
