New Delhi : Union Road, Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari on Monday posted a video of India’s first elevated Dwarka Expressway on social media platform X (Twitter). A bird’s eye view of Dwarka Expressway is shown in this video. In this video of Dwarka Expressway, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari can be heard saying that the state-of-the-art expressway will open for public use in three to four months. The expressway connecting the national capital Delhi with Gurugram in Haryana will be the country’s first elevated expressway.
Steel used 30 times more than the Eiffel Tower
The elevated Dwarka Expressway aims to ease traffic on the Delhi-Gurugram Expressway, which is a part of the Delhi-Jaipur-Ahmedabad-Mumbai section of the Golden Quadrilateral. About 2 lakh metric tonnes of steel is expected to be used in this expressway, built at a cost of about nine thousand crore rupees, which is 30 times more than the steel used in the construction of the world famous Eiffel Tower.
Burj Khalifa used six times more concrete
The biggest thing is that about 20 lakh cubic meters of concrete will be used in Dwarka Expressway, which is 6 times more than the concrete used to make Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest building. The Dwarka Expressway will also have hi-tech traffic management systems, which include advanced traffic management system, toll management system, CCTV cameras, etc.
Dwarka Expressway will be 16 lanes
Dwarka Expressway will have a total of 16 lanes. It will also have provision for three-lane service road on each side for easy access and exit. For this purpose, it will have four interchanges, which include tunnels or underpasses and elevated flyovers. Dwarka Expressway will also have the longest and widest urban road tunnel, which will be 3.6 km in length and 8 lanes in width.
Dwarka Expressway is 29 km long
The approximately 29 kilometer long Dwarka Expressway starts from Shiv-Murti on National Highway No. 8 or Delhi-Gurugram Expressway and passes through Dwarka Sector 21 to Gurugram border and ends near Kherki Daula toll plaza in Basai. About 19 km of the expressway falls in Haryana, while the remaining 10 km is in Delhi. Gadkari had earlier said that the Dwarka Expressway would provide an alternate route for commuters to reach the Indira Gandhi International Airport. This will also help in reducing the traffic on National Highway 8 by about 50 percent.
Politics heats up due to CAG report on Dwarka Expressway
In its recently released audit report, the CAG has said that the per kilometer construction cost of the Dwarka Expressway has gone up to Rs 251 crore per kilometer from the initial estimate of Rs 18.2 crore. Regarding this, the opposition parties have adopted an aggressive attitude towards the government. After the controversy escalated, the Ministry of Road Transport has tried to clear the situation at its level, but Gadkari is not happy with the attitude of the officials concerned for not clearing the apprehensions of the CAG at the time of the audit.

The Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG) has presented its assessment by dividing the total cost of Rs 91,000 crore on construction under the National Corridor Enablement Program by the 5,000 km route to be developed under the project. According to sources, the CAG itself has also accepted that the estimated cost of Rs 18.2 crore per kilometer has not included the standards related to the cost of flyovers, ring roads and approach roads to be developed under the project. In the development of this expressway, underpasses, tunnels and other parts have also been constructed along with the roads.
