Kolkata Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) has appointed Nitish Rana as the interim captain of the team after full-time captain Shreyas Iyer was ruled out of the opening matches of the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) season. The franchise announced this on Monday.
Apart from Nitish, there were two candidates for the interim captaincy of KKR, Sunil Narine, who joined the franchise in 2012. Narine recently led the Abu Dhabi Knight Riders in the inaugural edition of the International League T20 where they finished last among the six teams with one win and eight losses.
Nitish has captained Delhi in 12 T20 matches in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, winning eight and losing four. Middle-order batsman Nitish had joined KKR in 2018. He has played 74 matches for the franchise and scored 1744 runs at a strike rate of 135.61.
“While we are hopeful that Shreyas will recover and return in some part of the IPL 2023 edition, we are fortunate to have Nitish with his experience of captaining his state in limited overs cricket and IPL experience with KKR,” KKR said in a statement issued here. Will do a good job together (in Iyer’s absence). ,
“We are also confident that he will get all the necessary support off the field, along with head coach Chandrakant Pandit and the support staff, and the highly experienced players in the squad will provide the necessary support that Nitish may need on the field,” the statement said. “
Rana was the highest run-scorer for KKR last season after Iyer. Rana scored 361 runs at a strike rate of 143.82 as KKR ended a forgettable season with six wins and eight losses, finishing seventh in the league.
With Rana taking over as the skipper, there will be a complete change in the leadership of KKR. The KKR management had earlier appointed Chandrakant Pandit as head coach and Bharat Arun as bowling coach in place of Brendon McCullum.
