Kolkata: Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) on Monday named left-handed batsman Nitish Rana as the new captain of the team for the upcoming edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Rana will replace Shreyas Iyer, who is likely to undergo back surgery, threatening to rule him out for the entire season, but KKR’s statement clearly indicates that Iyer’s chances of making an early return look unlikely. According to KKR’s statement, ‘Nitish Rana will be the captain of the team in the absence of Shreyas Iyer. Iyer is recovering from a back injury. We expect Shreyas to recover from this and play in some part of the IPL 2023 phase. We are fortunate to have a player like Nitish who has immense IPL experience with KKR since 2018 having led his state team in white-ball cricket and will do a wonderful job for us.
Nitish Rana captained Delhi in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. However, he was dropped from the Delhi team due to his poor performance in this Ranji season. Rana has captained Delhi in 12 T20 matches in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, winning eight and losing four. KKR team will start their campaign against Punjab Kings on 1st April.
