Warned earlier: In January this year, the federation was disbanded days after wrestlers staged a protest at Jantar Mantar alleging sexual harassment against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, the then president of the federation. After this, the IOA constituted an adhoc committee on April 27 to look into the affairs of wrestling and asked for elections to be held within 45 days.
A day later, on 28 April, the UWW warned that the WFI would be suspended if elections were not held within the stipulated time. After a long wait, the UWW finally conveyed its decision to the WFI on Wednesday night.
Trials not affected: Despite the suspension of the Wrestling Federation of India, the selection trials of the wrestling team for the World Championship will be held in Patiala today and tomorrow. Bhupender Singh Bajwa, head of the adhoc committee constituted by the Indian Olympic Association, told PTI that the trials will be held as per the pre-determined schedule.

Many dates have been fixed for the election of Wrestling Federation of India, but the result is zero so far. First of all, the Sports Ministry stopped the elections to be held on May 7. Then the date of 11 July was fixed. Then the Assam Wrestling Federation moved the Gauhati High Court raising some issues and the elections were again put on hold. However, the Supreme Court later cleared the way for the election on a petition by the Andhra Wrestling Federation. Then the new date of the election was fixed on August 12. This time the Punjab and Haryana High Court stayed the petition of the Haryana Wrestling Federation. This matter is now pending in the Supreme Court. Till the formation of new executive body and withdrawal of suspension of Wrestling Federation of India, it is possible even further that Indian wrestlers may win gold in international competitions, but India’s national anthem may not be played.
