Alcaraz took the first set 7-5 in a tie-breaker. After this, Djokovic made a tremendous comeback and won the next two sets 7-6, 7-6. After the victory, Djokovic lay down on the court and celebrated loudly.
During this match, Alcaraz looked a bit sore due to a cramp in his hand. The 20-year-old youngster looked emotional after losing the match.
Djokovic and Alcaraz battled hard for three hours and 49 minutes. The Serbian avenged his Wimbledon final loss to the Spaniard and leveled their ATP head-to-head at 2-2.
Djokovic said after the match, “It was a great match and nothing less than a roller coaster. I don’t think I’ve played more matches like this in my life.”
“Maybe I can compare it to the 2012 Australian Open against Nadal, which was very challenging. The match was three sets, but we fought for about four hours. Mental, emotional, physical Definitely one of the most exciting and toughest matches ever.”
Djokovic is now the oldest champion in the history of the tournament, breaking the record held by 35-year-old Ken Rosewall. On the other hand, 20-year-old Alcaraz was the youngest finalist in the event since 19-year-old Pete Sampras in 1991. (IANS)
